Every WOLVERINE Movie in Chronological Order

Even if not all of the films in which Hugh Jackman appeared as Logan were successful, it’s likely that you won’t have any trouble finding fans of Jackman’s Wolverine portrayal.

Considering this, we have made the decision to provide you with a complete list of all of the Wolverine films in chronological order. It’s indeed up to you to pick whether you will watch all of them in sequence or merely the ones that are considered to be the best.

Although most Marvel movies are thrilling, if we’re being really honest, we have to admit that there are instances when they’re also hard to understand.

Timelines aren’t constantly straightforward, and publication dates aren’t necessarily in order, especially when it comes to the X-Men series. This is especially true for the brand’s origin stories, spinoffs, and sequels.

Ever since the release of the first X-Men movie in 2000, there have been several follow-up installments, as well as prequels, reboots, and spin-off movies. But nevertheless, there has never been a crystal clear road map uniting them into a coherent story.

In fact, there are innumerable contradictions and plot holes that even a rebooted chronology is unable to explain away.

The history of the corporation is yet another element that contributes to the chaos of the X-Men timelines. The series was first developed by Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox, both of which were subsequently bought by Disney, but not simultaneously.

Despite the fact that it could look as if all of them ought to be accessible on Disney+, there are certain instances in which the streaming rights remain with another provider. In spite of this, the events shown in the X-Men movies fall into this order chronologically, hence this is how the films should be seen in order.

The Wolverine Films in Chronological Order

The chronological sequence of the Wolverine films is the most sensible way to watch them since this corresponds to the periods in which the events depicted in the films are said to have taken place. Check the order it appears below.

  • X-Men: First Class (2011)
  • X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
  • X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
  • X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)
  • X-Men (2000)
  • X2: X-Men United (2003)
  • X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
  • The Wolverine (2013)
  • The New Mutants (2020)
  • Logan (2017)

The Order of Wolverine Films

Now that we have your attention, we will teach you about all films that feature Wolverine, in addition to what the films are on. The order in which to watch the X-Men films is even more confusing than the order in which to watch Wolverines, however, we’ll save that discussion for another time.

X-Men: First Class (2011)

Although X-Men: First Class is technically the 5th film in the X-Men franchise to be released by Fox, we have decided to place it at the top of this ranking because it tells the origin stories of several of the most important characters in the X-Men Cinematic Universe.

The character of Charles Xavier, played by James McAvoy, is transformed during the course of the movie into Professor X, played by Michael Fassbender, and Erik Lehnsherr.

The majority of the action takes place in 1962, when two mutants, one of whom is the energy-absorbing Sebastian Shaw (played by Kevin Bacon), are trying to recruit more mutants in order to prevent another mutant, who is also a mutant, from starting a nuclear war between the United States of America and the Soviet Union.

In the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, 2 mutants who would go on to become leaders of tomorrow, Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr, encounter one another for the 1st time, shortly before they would go on to become Professor X and Magneto, respectively.

After starting their relationship as mates, the 2 strongest men recruit a special group of exceptional meta-humans with the support of CIA agent Moira MacTaggert.

At the same time, Eric’s mortal enemy and a dangerous mutant, Sebastian Shaw, is putting together his personal group of evil followers with the intention of starting a catastrophic nuclear war.

Everybody has to decide where they stand before the crucial confrontation can take place since the scene has been prepared. Will there be no damage done to the relationship between Charles and Erik?

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

The action of Days of Future Past happens in the apocalyptic year 2023 when unstoppable robots known as Sentinels are hunting out mutants and putting them to death.

Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is sent back to 1973 by Kitty Pryde (Elliott Page), who makes use of their talents in order to save Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) from being killed by the mutant Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence).

Sentinels, which are powerful robots, will one day eradicate mutants and the people that help them. This will take place in the future.

Xavier reveals that the indestructible Sentinels were constructed utilizing Mystique’s DNA, which was captured in 1973 during her plot to assassinate Dr. Bolivar Trask, the developer of the Sentinels.

This takes place in a Chinese monastery, where Professor Xavier, Wolverine, Magneto, Storm, Kitty Pryde, and her allies are gathered.

Xavier reveals to them that their sole chance of success is to utilize Pryde’s talents to go back in time to 1973 and combine forces with Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr in an effort to persuade Mystique to reject her scheme.

Nevertheless, Wolverine is the only character that can withstand the consequences of traveling through time. Will he be capable to put an end to Mystique and the Sentinel Program in the moment to avert the annihilation of mutants and the humans who stand by their side?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

The audience was given a substantial amount of information on Wolverine’s life prior to his involvement with the X-Men in this, the 1st movie in the series to concentrate solely on that character.

The movie reveals his actual origins, his bone claws that have developed on their own, and the challenging relationship he has with his brother, Victor Creed (Sabretooth).

The first movie in the Logan trilogy, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, explains how the character gets his bones encased in adamantium and shows when and why the famous mutant loses his memory and becomes Logan. The movie is also the first installment in the Logan trilogy.

James Logan and Victor Creed, who are mutant half-brothers, have spent over 200 years evading capture and being hunted like beasts. They are constantly on the run.

Because of their extraordinary capacity for regeneration and self-healing, the brothers will eventually go their separate ways after Colonel William Stryker offers them a chance to make amends.

This will take place after they have endured an unending string of harrowing conflicts thanks to their extraordinary abilities.

But against the background of his own loss, Logan will have to overcome an even larger challenge: a formidable adversary who has been scientifically enhanced. Can he be defeated by the wild Wolverine?

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

There is just one action scene that features Wolverine in X-Men: Apocalypse, yet it is often considered to be the most exciting part of the movie.

This scenario portrays a savage version of Logan who, as a result of his incarceration in the Weapon X program, has completely lost any awareness of who he is.

The fact that Jean is able to recover some of his memories prior to Logan’s escape is consistent with the events that take place in the rest of the film.

Since the beginning of civilization, he has been worshiped in the same manner as a deity. Apocalypse, the first and strongest mutant in the X-Men reality, was able to become immortal and invincible by absorbing the skills of a number of other mutants and combining them.

He is disheartened by the civilization he finds when he awakens, and he recruits a group of strong mutants, along with a disillusioned Magneto, with the intention of eradicating mankind and establishing a new world system over that he would rule.

As the fate of the planet hangs in the line, Raven is tasked with guiding a group of inexperienced X-Men in their battle against their most dangerous adversary in order to prevent the obliteration of mankind with Professor X’s guidance.

Although the chronology is somewhat hazy as a result of the time travel and unclear change from Wolverine’s previous location in Days of Future Past towards where he is during the beginning of Apocalypse, it assists in the growth of the character’s legendary adamantium claws for its final movie.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)

This will be the last X-Men movie produced by Fox. The production company does its best to adapt one of the most well-known stories from the X-Men comic books, which centers on Jean Grey.

After their triumph against Apocalypse 8 years before, the X-Men are called upon to go into space in order to save a crew of astronauts. They are hailed as heroes all across the globe for their actions.

Meanwhile, the telepath Jean Grey, played by Sophie Turner, is hit by an unexplained source of energy that not only dramatically improves her skills but also reawakens horrifying memories that Xavier had repressed (McAvoy).

Nearly ten years after the almost-catastrophic happenings of X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), Professor Charles Xavier’s X-Men have forged an advantageous partnership with mankind, embracing incredibly dangerous missions as the courageous protectors of the Earth.

Jean Grey was supposed to have passed away in 1992, but she was instead imbued with an unimaginable universal force during a perilous situation at NASA.

This boundless but uncontrolled energy enhanced her already strong abilities, changing her into a powerful beast.

The deterioration of Jean’s magical talents continues, making her a direct danger not only to herself and her friends but potentially to everyone and everything on the whole globe. Is the world’s population ready for the return of the Dark Phoenix?

X-Men (2000)

In the first installment of the series, Patrick Stewart plays Professor X, while Ian McKellan takes on the role of Magneto. The Mutant Registration Act requires all mutants to personally identify and enroll with the authorities.

These old friends, however, are on different sides of a controversy about this act.

Magneto has the goal of transforming the world’s most powerful people into mutants by using a machine and the powers of a young mutant who goes by the name Rogue (Anna Paquin).

However, Magneto is unaware that the mechanism would kill the people it changes into mutants.

Senator Robert Kelly is laying the groundwork for a new Holocaust to take place in the not-too-distant future, when kids will be born with a certain X-factor in their genetics, infusing them with special powers and changing them into mutants.

He is doing this in the name of science, of course. Magneto, also known as Erik Lehnsherr, and Professor Charles Xavier, sometimes known as Xavier, are both mutants, although they were formerly comrades. The scenario puts them against one another.

Xavier is looking for a peace settlement to the antagonism aimed against mutants, but Magneto aims to even the odds by constructing a device that speeds the mutation cycle throughout all people, essentially making everybody on an even playing ground.

In order to win the battle against Magneto, Xavier gathers together a unique team of mutants who are known as the “X-Men.” Rogue, a teenage girl, and Logan, a powerful and angry mutant who has no recollection of his past, emerge at the same time. Both of these mutants have uncommon traits.

Their investigations into who they are inevitably lead them to cross paths with Professor X and Magneto, however, the question remains: for what reason?

X2: X-Men United (2003)

The X-Men are up against a foe, Colonel William Stryker, who has already been in contact with Wolverine, and this book digs even farther into Wolverine’s background.

The vast bulk of the original cast is back, and several new faces have been hired in key roles, such as Nightcrawler, played by Alan Cumming.

Wolverine/Logan stays at the school overnight to keep an eye on the children while Charles Xavier pays a trip to Magneto in his plastic isolation cell.

Wolverine/Logan returned from their expedition to the north without finding anything. Storm and Jean Grey look for Nightcrawler, a mutant teleporter who tried to kill the President.

William Stryker, a psychiatrist who has started experimenting on mutants, arranges an assault on Xavier’s mansion, leaving just a handful of mutants with a chance to escape.

Magneto is let out of prison and forms a temporary alliance with the X-Men. With Professor Xavier in Stryker’s custody, the mutants join together in an effort to resist Stryker’s plans to eradicate mutants entirely and save Professor Xavier.

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

Fans have noticed a difference in tone and style, despite the fact that the same actors are included in this film. Rush Hour filmmaker Brett Ratner took over directing duties from the series’ original director, Bryan Singer, for this installment.

In it, mutants discuss the prospect of a “medicine for mutants” that would reduce the effectiveness of mutant powers.

After their uneasy alliance with Magneto in X2 (2003), the entire species of powerful meta-humans is confronted with an excruciating dilemma: due to a breakthrough medical procedure, all mutants are now able to suppress their particular gene and live a normal human life.

This presents a significant problem for the race of powerful meta-humans.

As a former member of the X-Men, Jean Grey is now undergoing a transformation that will transform her into the powerful and evil Phoenix.

At the same time, Magneto is gathering an army of unbeatable mutant friends amid the backdrop of terrible struggle within the mutant civilization.

The fight for survival among the superhumans began as an effort to gain social acceptance in the beginning. Now is the time for all mutants to choose aside. Will Professor X, Storm, Wolverine, and a handful of other dedicated X-Men be able to put a stop to the mighty Phoenix?

The Wolverine (2013)

This film, which was released in 2013, is a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men: The Last Stand. It featured Wolverine’s glorious comeback to the franchise.

Jackman’s character embarks on a journey to Japan in the hopes of finding an old friend who he had helped save in the past. There, Wolverine laments the death of Jean Grey while being involved in a scheme that involves mutants and the yakuza.

Logan has become a hermit and now lives in the middle of the woods by himself. He is tormented by recurring dreams about Jean Grey.

Yukio, a young woman from Japan who is skilled with a samurai sword, comes up to Logan one day and tells him that her grandfather, a prominent businessman named Yashida, is nearing the end of his life and would want to see him one further time until he dies.

During World War II, Yashida, a Japanese soldier, was in Nagasaki when Logan came to his aid and saved his life.

When Logan and Yukio make their way back to Japan, an elderly Yashida offers to bestow his gift of immortality on Logan, however, Logan politely refuses the offer.

During his sleep, Logan gets a strange dream about Yashida’s doctor, Viper, and shortly afterward, Yashida passes away.

Although Logan is present at the funeral, the Yakuza makes an effort to abduct Yashida’s granddaughter Mariko while the ceremony is in progress.

After rescuing Mariko and escaping the area with her, Logan gets shot, and his wounds do not heal properly. Mariko is defended by Logan, who then questions him about what had happened.

The New Mutants (2020)

The New Mutants was originally going to be produced by 20th Century Fox, however, Marvel ended up buying the rights to the X-Men franchise.

The plot of the movie centers on 5 young mutants who are trying to rid themselves of their abilities by checking themselves into a creepy old institution.

The New Mutants eventually turns into a horror thriller after establishing this premise. The only problem is that the movie isn’t all that great, to begin with.

This led to the conclusion that The New Mutants should be made available on request throughout the outbreak, and afterward it should be forgotten.

Despite this, the film features a host of promising young actors and actresses, such as Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams, both of whom are known for their roles in Game of Thrones.

After a terrifying encounter with a strange storm in which she came dangerously close to losing her life, Danielle Moonstar comes to an abandoned research facility that is led by the enigmatic Dr. Cecilia Reyes.

There, Dr. Reyes presents Dani to 4 other extraordinary kids named Illyana Rasputin, Rahne Sinclair, Sam Guthrie, and Roberto da Costa, all of whom desire to protect them before they master how to completely handle their remarkable powers.

In spite of the fact that the remarkable team of traumatized inmates thinks they are receiving treatment and care, they soon start having terrifying hallucinations.

On the other hand, the purpose of this establishment was to provide a safe atmosphere. Who exactly are these people—patients or prisoners?

Logan (2017)

Logan, the unbreakable animalistic warrior formerly called the Wolverine, discovers himself aging and losing his extraordinary healing powers in the near future of 2029 when the mutant species is in danger of extinction.

As Logan drives about discreetly, he does his best to hide the old Professor Xavier from prying eyes, but things take an unexpected turn when a mysterious lady asks him to transport a little mutant kid named Laura.

The Canadian government is reluctant to give up such a valuable commodity so easily since the unaccompanied teenager will likely have a better life outside of the country’s boundaries. Will Logan, as he becomes older, be able to protect not just himself but also Laura?

The first episode of Logan aired in 2017, although the story takes place in the year 2029, at a time when mutants are facing the danger of becoming extinct.

Even though Logan (Jackman) is considerably older now and a long way removed from his legendary moments as Wolverine, he can’t shake the feeling that he has to help a mutant youngster named Laura. In addition to that, it ties up the loose ends of the series quite well.

Does It Matter What Sequence You See the Wolverine Films in?

Although it is not required to watch every 11 X-men movies in order to understand them, it is important to do so in order to get familiar with the hero and his story.

Following every 11 X-men movie might be a little complex. Furthermore, starting with Logan will cause you to get lost in the chronology, which is why I suggest viewing them in the order that they were released.

Are There Going to Be More Wolverine Films?

There is a possibility that there may be other Wolverine movies in the future. A Wolverine television series is reportedly in the works for production on Disney+, as reported by That Hashtag Show.

The insider claims that Marvel has not yet selected a showrunner or director and that they have not yet cast the superhero who will play the main role.

It is anticipated that an announcement about the Wolverine television series will take place later this year. In the beginning, it is claimed that Marvel is contemplating using the Weapon X story arc for the first season of its new show.

Will We See Hugh Jackman Reprise His Role as Wolverine?

It does not appear likely that Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine in the coming years.

In a recent interview that aired on Jake Hamilton’s show, “Jake’s Takes,” Hugh Jackman gave an official response to the rumors that have been circulating around his possible return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the role of Wolverine.

To start, he is getting on in years, and it is quite doubtful that he will make another appearance in the Marvel universe unless the company chooses to send him again as an early figure.

The old Wolverine actually performs a triumphant farewell performance as his former self, slaughtering enemies to safeguard the next generation of mutants and transferring the torch to X-23 in anticipation of a potential Logan spinoff.

Jackman has every right to turn down the opportunity to star in another Wolverine movie or cameo after delivering such a flawless send-off for the character.
